Bangkok

I went to Thailand to get away from what was a difficult year here at home, and looking back on my photographs I can easily recall my state of mind at the time. I started my trip in Bangkok, and almost all of the photographs I took turned out to be very transportation oriented. I photographed bikes, boats, cars, airplanes, tuk tuks, scooters; I photographed anything that had to do with getting away from where I was at that moment.

When I left Bangkok I went south to Railay West in the Krabi province, and all of my photographs from the time spent there are much less busy, much less movement-based. But, while I was in Bangkok, the dominant theme was "Get away." These Vespas come out of that experience.

#2

My friends Jarrod & Taryn live in this great apartment in Hayes Valley in San Francisco. I go to San Francisco as often as I can to see them and to take photographs. It is such a photogenic city.

Leaving their apartment you are faced with apartment #2. Each time I leave Jarrod & Taryn's and I see apartment #2 I like to imagine a story of who lives there, what they're doing, and where they'll go that night. Last time I was there I imagined an older man behind that door, a pack rat of sorts, collecting old record players and modern furniture from the 1950s and 60s.

The story goes on and on, detail upon detail, but what strikes me every time is that all I need is curiosity, awe, and wonder, and I'll be set the rest of my life.

San Francisco

Joshua Heinemann took me to this spot in San Francisco. We sat on the dead end street at the top of the hill and watched the city wake up. San Franciscans talk endlessly of how perfect their city is, how there's excellent coffee, art, and local businesses. Like any out-of-towner, I am resistant to anything being better than where I live, but I confess, San Francisco has a magic to it that is undeniable.

Still, I'll never concede that better coffee exists outside of Seattle.

Lev

When I go to the Seattle Art Museum the very first thing I do is look at the Warhol pop art pieces for about 2 minutes, then I immediately make my way over to the Jackson Pollock permanent piece entitled "Waves." After spending time with Pollock I wonder fairly aimlessly around the museum.

One afternoon I walked down a hall of photographs that didn't interest me all that much, turned the corner, and found a gift. A young girl, maybe 9 years old, sat in front of a large piece with a sketchbook in her lap. I stood and watched her for 20 minutes, and she never broke her stride. Look up. Look down. Sketch. Up. Down. Sketch. She paid no mind to others walking in and out of the room. When the room was emptied of other patrons I stood behind her, focused my camera, and took what has become one of my favorite photographs.

She is like Asher Lev to me.
